This week in practice, we focused on refining essential wrestling techniques, emphasizing movement, control, and execution. Whether you're a seasoned wrestler or just starting, these drills will sharpen your skills and give you a competitive edge. Let’s break down what we covered!
1. Back Step Drill (Judo-Inspired Movement)
We kicked things off with the back step drill, a movement borrowed from Judo but equally valuable in wrestling. This footwork helps create space, generate momentum, and set up throws. Proper execution is key—keeping your balance while maintaining control of your opponent will make a difference in transitions and takedown attempts.
2. Back Step Head & Arm
Building off the back step movement, we integrated the head & arm throw. This technique relies on timing and body mechanics rather than sheer strength. Remember to:✔ Step deep and commit to the motion✔ Control the head and arm to direct your opponent’s fall✔ Keep your hips in position to finish strong
3. Par Terre Top/Bottom Overview
We reviewed par terre positioning, focusing on both top and bottom roles. On top, the goal is to maintain pressure and set up turns. On bottom, we worked on defending and escaping efficiently. Key takeaways:🔹 Keep your base low and elbows in to avoid openings🔹 Constant movement and hand fighting can create opportunities to escape🔹 Be patient—small adjustments can make a big impact
4. Gut Wrench & Leg Lace
We wrapped up practice with two essential turns for scoring in freestyle wrestling:🔥 Gut Wrench – Tight grip, chest-to-back pressure, and a powerful hip roll make for an effective turn.🔥 Leg Lace – Securing the ankles and using hip elevation allows for continuous rolls and big points.Drilling these consistently will make them second nature in live matches.
Final Thoughts
This week’s practice focused on fundamental positioning, movement, and scoring techniques. Keep drilling, stay disciplined, and bring intensity every session. See you on the mat next week!
Let’s keep grinding! 💪🤼♂️
